DAMASCUS (AFP) - Bahrain's foreign minister has said it is a "historic time" to relaunch the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, following talks with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

"The Middle East peace process must be comprehensive and not based on just one aspect," said Foreign Minister Sheikh Khaled bin Ahmed al-Khalifa, according to the SANA news agency.

"Currently there exists a historic opportunity to relaunch it," he added Wednesday, praising Syria's role as "important in accomplishing the peace process" after meeting Assad in Damascus.

Sheikh Khaled last week visited the West Bank political capital of Ramallah for talks with president Mahmud Abbas on the Palestinian political crisis and ways to end in-fighting between the Hamas and Abbas's Fatah party.
