WASHINGTON (AFP) - Americans feel better about most countries around the world, except North Korea, Iraq and Venezuela, New York's Quinnipiac University found in a poll conducted after US legislative elections this month.

Britain, Canada and Israel generated the warmest feelings among the 1,623 voters in the November 13-19 telephone survey.

China, India and Israel "grew the most" in the good-feeling barometer, while North Korea and Iran remained at the bottom and Iraq and Venezuela saw their ratings fall since August, the survey said.

"Although the changes are in some cases quite small, the trend is unmistakable," said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"What we have found in the past is that, in general, Democrats give foreign nations higher ratings than do Republicans," he said.

"The poll was taken after an election in which Democrats triumphed, so perhaps that is what we are seeing," Brown added.

The survey, which had a margin of error of 2.4 percentage points, asked voters to rate their feelings toward a list of foreign nations, on a scale of 0-100.

Britain topped the list at 78.9. Germany (58.1) and India (56.6) came in fourth and fifth in the list, and North Korea came in lowest at 13.5.

Also sharing the lowest rungs were Syria (24.3), the "Palestinian Government" (23.8), and Cuba (24.1).

In the November 7 legislative elections, the Democrats defeated the ruling Republicans by taking away their majority in both houses of Congress.
