RAMALLAH, West Bank (AFP) - US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will meet Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas in the occupied West Bank on September 16 in her latest visit to the region ahead of an international peace conference, a senior Palestinian official said on Sunday."Dr. Rice will meet with president Abbas on September 16 in Ramallah," the official told AFP on condition of anonymity. The report could not be confirmed with US officials.
Rice and Abbas last met in Ramallah on August 2, when she said she would visit the region again before an international Middle East peace conference called for by US President George W. Bush this autumn.
Washington has increased its diplomatic efforts to jumpstart dormant Israeli-Palestinian peace talks since the Islamist Hamas seized power in the Gaza Strip in mid-June, ousting forces loyal to the secular Abbas and cleaving the Palestinians into two entities.
Washington and Israel are now seeking to boost Abbas, who controls the West Bank, and to isolate Hamas which is considered a terror group by the European Union, Israel and the US.
