The attack followed a Palestinian suicide bombing in the Israeli city of Haifa Wednesday that killed at least 15 people. Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon (news - web sites)'s security cabinet had met Wednesday evening to consider a response. There was no immediate word on possible casualties or damage from the missile strike.

Palestinian witnesses in Gaza said a column of Israeli tanks had also entered the desert territory and taken positions near the Jabalya refugee camp on the main road into nearby Gaza City. The Israeli army had no immediate comment.
