Israeli Missile Strike Kills Palestinian in Gaza
GAZA (Reuters) -
Israeli helicopter gunships fired two
missiles at a car in Gaza City on Thursday, killing one
Palestinian, Palestinian security sources and medics said.
It was the second Israeli air strike this week as the army
pressed ahead with actions against Palestinian militants
spearheading the 30-month Palestinian uprising for
independence.
Such attacks had abated with the start of the U.S.-led war
on Iraq (news - web sites) after Washington appealed for calm in the region.
Palestinian witnesses said helicopters hovered over Gaza
City before firing two missiles at a Palestinian car driving
through a neighborhood known to be a stronghold of the Islamic
militant group Hamas, Palestinian security sources said.
Hamas has been the main group behind a suicide bombing
campaign against Israelis, killing scores since the start of
the uprising that began in September 2000 when peace talks
stalled.
Palestinian security sources said the car in the Sheikh
Radwan neighborhood was completely destroyed and hospital
officials said one unidentified person had been killed.
The army had no immediate comment on the report. Israel has
tracked and killed dozens of militants during the uprising.
Palestinians call it state-sponsored assassination. Israel says
it is acting in self-defense.
