Israeli Troops Kill Palestinian Cameraman in Nablus

NABLUS, West Bank (Reuters) - Israeli troops shot dead a Palestinian cameraman during a clash with gunmen in the West Bank city of Nablus on Saturday, Palestinian witnesses and medics said.

Dozens of Israeli soldiers raided Nablus's historic old city, or Casbah, on Saturday, encountering scores of Palestinian youths who began throwing stones, Palestinian witnesses said. Palestinian gunmen also opened fire, and a fierce gun battle with the soldiers ensued, they said.

A group of Palestinian journalists, including a Reuters cameraman and photographer, said they were trying to film the clash on the outskirts of the Casbah when soldiers opened fire on them.

One Palestinian cameraman from another news organisation was killed in the shooting, the Reuters journalists and Palestinian medics said. Witnesses said he was wearing a jacket marked "press."

Hospital officials said at least 17 Palestinians were wounded in the clash.

The Israeli army had no immediate comment.

The army reoccupied most Palestinian cities and towns in the West Bank last summer after Palestinian militants carried out a wave of suicide bombings inside Israel as part of a 30-month-old uprising for statehood.
