Palestinian Journalists Recall Colleague

NABLUS, West Bank - Palestinian journalists marched through Nablus on Saturday to remember Nazeh Darwazeh, the Associated Press Television News cameraman killed a week earlier while videotaping clashes between Israeli troops and Palestinians.

About 30 journalists accompanied by prominent city officials and Darwazeh's relatives marched from the Palestinian TV building to the site in this West Bank city where he was shot.

Darwazeh, 43, was killed while taping a confrontation between Israeli soldiers and Palestinians throwing stones and firebombs.

Witnesses said Darwazeh was shot by an Israeli soldier taking cover behind an armored vehicle in an alley. The military insisted there were also Palestinian gunmen in the alley.

Many marchers held banners saying "Killing cameraman Nazeh Darwazeh equals killing the truth."

The Brussels-based International Federation of Journalists condemned the killing, saying there was evidence of Israeli soldiers targeting journalists. It called on Israeli authorities to carry out a full investigation and said they don't do enough to protect media covering the conflict.

The group represents more than 500,000 journalists in over 100 countries.
