After test, Israel within range of Iranian missile
JERUSALEM (AFP) -
Iran has successfully test-fired a Shihab-3 ballistic missile capable of hitting Israeli territory and American forces in the Gulf, according to a report in the Haaretz newspaper.
The launch last week was the latest in a series of tests that have taken place over the past five years, the daily said Friday.
The missile is thought to have a range of some 1,300 kilometers (812 miles) and could also strike Turkey or the Indian subcontinent, it added.
Following the fall of Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s regime in Iraq (news - web sites), Iran is seen by many as Israel's most dangerous enemy.
The Israeli army's chief of staff, General Moshe Yaalon, warned of the "Iranian threat" during a visit last week to the Pentagon (news - web sites).
Iran, which does not recognize Israel, is a staunch supporter of Palestinians and lends support to their Islamic militant groups.
